I
believe that one of the most aggravating things to see is someone
claiming to be talking in tongues, they stand there uttering this
strange language and expect people to buy that what they are doing is
talking in tongues. What is sad is that many good people are misled
on this matter of speaking with tongues. They are very eager people,
often good Christians in the sense that they want all God has, and
they want to please God. They are spiritually-minded, good people,
but often they are rather ignorant of the Bible and that makes them a
prey to people who come along with false doctrine and a good deal of
emotion and exhortation, with not much Bible teaching, but I want to
show you what the Bible really teaches about talking in tongues.
In
reading what the Bible has to say about speaking in tongues, one
needs to realize that the sole purpose of the people speaking in
tongues was to get souls saved. Incidentally, talking in tongues
means speaking one language and others can understand no matter what
language is spoken.
If tongues are for today, I want them. If
tongues are not for today, I do not want to be deceived. The only way
for any person to be convinced is if they are willing to take the
Word of God, examine It honestly, and stand 100% on "Thus saith
the Lord"! It can be stated no better than in Isaiah 8:20, "To
the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this
word, it is because there is no light in them."
The Christian life is exciting and fulfilling. There is nothing more
thrilling than witnessing and leading people to Christ. Three things
found in Ephesians 6:17-20 are responsible for the Christian's
motivation and enthusiasm: "And
take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in
the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and
supplication for all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given
unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery
of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I
may speak boldly, as I ought to speak."
- Ephesians 6"17-20.
Let
God speak to You.
"Take...the
Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God."
Let
us speak to God.
"Praying
always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit..."
Let
us speak to the lost.
"...and
for me...that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery
of the gospel."
This is all the "spiritual high"
we will ever need.Tongues advocates are supplementing the speaking in
tongues for something they are missing from Ephesians 6:17-20. My
motivation, encouragement, and enthusiasm comes from God speaking to
me and my speaking to Him. The excitement of the Christian life is
found in defending the faith, witnessing, and leading others to
Christ. I am fully satisfied with this, and need nothing more. I have
all I need in Christ ... not tongues.
