Water from a rock, at war with Amalek, Moses' father-in-law visits
and brings his wife and kids, Moses gets help, and God appears on
Mount Sinai.
Hello My Friend/Guest,
I use to think that if
I wanted something done right I needed to do it myself or that I
could get it done faster without anyone getting in my way. I come to
realize two things over the years: 1. Many hands make light work. 2.
I am not invincible. We when get to heaven we are not going to tire
out our bodies, but while we live in the flesh we just simply can not
do everything by ourselves all the time. Do you know the reason why
so many people are unhealthy, overweight, or depressed? They take on
too much thinking they can handle it by themselves and when they fail
they beat themselves up over it. The Bible says, “Two
are better than one; because they have a good reward for their
labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to
him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help
him up.”
- Ecclesiastes 4:9,10. We all need a helping hand from time to time,
we always need God's hand in things, but sometimes we need the help
of others as well.
Moses had the great task of leading the
entire group of Israelites from Egypt to Canaan, God did appoint his
brother Aaron to help him, but other than that he pretty much handled
everything on his own. I am sure that Moses was pretty tired at the
end of the day after dealing with the burdens and complaints of so
many. Moses would soon find out that maybe he needed a little help.
Even in the wilderness they had enemies, they were fighting with the
Amalekites.
“Then
came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. And Moses said unto
Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I
will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.
So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and
Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And it came to
pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he
let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses hands were heavy; and
they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and
Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the
other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going
down of the sun.”
- Exodus 17:8-12.
As long as Moses held up the rod God
helped them and they were winning, but the second Moses put his hand
down God stopped helping them and the Amalekites were defeating them.
However, when Aaron and Hur helped him through his weakness they
prevailed. It was not the rod that gave them the victory or that God
was not with them because he did not hold up the rod, it was looking
to God that gave them the victory. Whenever Moses held up the rod he
was looking to God, but when he became weak and let the rod down he
took his eyes off God and they failed. Our faith in God is like a
roller coaster, sometimes it is up and sometimes it is down, and when
it gets down we can take our eyes off Him. With the help of other
believers encouraging us we get stronger in our faith and will
prevail. “We
then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and
not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for
his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as
it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on
me.”
- Romans 15:1-3.
When Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, heard all
that God was doing for the Israelites and that they were now free he
met up with him. He was pleased to see all that God had done, but was
a bit disturbed to see that Moses was taking on all the burdens of
the people all by himself.
“And
Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the
hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath
delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians...And it
came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and
the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening...And
Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not
good. Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is
with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to
perform it thyself alone. Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee
counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to
God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God: And thou shalt
teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein
they must walk, and the work that they must do.”
- Exodus 18:10,13,17-20.
Moses did what Jethro suggested, he
taught and appointed people to take on most of the burdens of the
people, except for the things that really needed his attention.
“And
Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the
people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties,
and rulers of tens. And they judged the people at all seasons: the
hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they
judged themselves. And Moses let his father in law depart; and he
went his way into his own land.”
- Exodus 18:25-27.
We all need help from others, it is wise
to teach others what we know, we are not invincible and we will not
be around forever, so, it is important that we teach others so they
can continue to do what we have worked so hard to accomplish. “And
the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men,
apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose
themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the
acknowledging of the truth;”
- II Timothy 2:24,25.
We all need God's help, in everything
that we do, God promises to always be there for us when we keep His
covenant. “And
Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the
mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell
the children of Israel; Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians,
and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself. Now
therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant,
then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for
all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests,
and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto
the children of Israel.”
- Exodus 19:3-6.
What is our covenant with God today?
Trusting in His Son, Jesus Christ, and allowing Him to live through
us. Jesus said, “Believe
me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me
for the very works' sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that
believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater
works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And
whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father
may be glorified in the Son.”
- John 14:11-13. Even Jesus needs our help, Jesus knew that He was
not always going to be here on earth to reach everyone with the
Gospel. Therefore, He entrusts believers to go out and do what He did
here on earth as well. In fact, He knew that we would reach even more
people that He would. Why? We believe in Him by faith, we did not get
to see Him in the flesh, so, it is by our faith in Him that He lives
in us and others see it and learn of Him. And another thing, if we
stopped telling people about Jesus millions of people would end up in
hell because they have no one to teach them the truth.

Christ Revealed:
Today Jesus is revealed through the Rock and the Water. “If
thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give
me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given
thee living water.”
- John 4:10.
Thanks and God Bless You, I am praying for
you,
Christina
